ArmsNetAfrica - Web Portal on Arms Management in Africa

Welcome to the Web Portal on Arms Management in Africa!

UN New YorkAfrica is a vibrant and diverse continent in terms of culture, language and geography. African people consistently display positive aspects of humanity, such as reconciliation, generosity and a sense of community. Nevertheless, achieving sustainable peace and development in many African countries is forestalled by violent conflict, poverty and weak state capacity. This state of affairs is exacerbated by the availability (and proliferation) of small arms and light weapons, the distribution of landmines, as well as the potential threat posed by nuclear, chemical and biological weapons transfers. However, despite these dynamics, inter-governmental organisations, national governments and civil society groupings in Africa have taken significant steps to control and prevent the proliferation of arms and reduce incidents of armed violence.

ArmsNetAfrica is a web portal that presents a variety of resources, documents, events and links on armed violence (and its reduction), arms proliferation, arms control and disarmament in Africa. ArmsNetAfrica is intended to be a reference tool for policy makers, researchers, journalists and civil society activists working on these issues. It is hosted by the Arms Management Programme (AMP) of the Institute for Security Studies. AMP welcomes contributions and partners wishing to play a role in the development of the site.
